The dispute between Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi about appointment of the Inspector General of Nepal Police has reached the tipping point. Deuba wants to promote DIG Jai Bahadur Chand to the top post while Nidhi is in favor of another DIG Navaraj Silwal. Nidhi had reached Deuba's residence last week with a proposal to make Silwal IGP where Deuba warned Nidhi, according to sources, to not appoint Silwal at any cost. He ordered Nidhi to appoint Chand instead. Deuba asked Nidhi to resign if he cannot appoint Chand after Nidhi refused to comply, according to the sources. Nidhi left Deuba's residence after the disagreement with Deuba. Nidhi has been batting for Silwal even after that. Deuba had raised the issue even during the unofficial meeting of the party's office-bearers and senior leaders held on February 1. Deuba said Nidhi should follow the party president's directive on the issue of IGP appointment. General Secretary Sashank Koirala and his predecessor Prakash Man Singh supported Deuba during the meeting but Nidhi refused to budge. Deuba met Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the latter's residence in Baluwatar and requested to not take decision if minister Nidhi were to bring a proposal about IGP appointment after learning that the cabinet meeting last Thursday could appoint IGP. NC and CPN (Maoist Center) have already agreed that the former will get to appoint the IGP of Nepal Police and the latter that of the Armed Police Force (APF).
